Hey guys, check out this neat half I found awhile back- it has beautiful gold tones with green and red streaks here and there. Sorry, but the pic really doesn't do it justice, best one I could get after several attempts.

Anyone else found a rainbow coin out there in rolls?

I have seen an occasional one with light rainbow toning, but nothing as extreme as yours.
I got a black one tonight, and also one with an obverse painted red!

I wonder if it has that appearance because it has been heated up?

That is some nice looking toning. I have come across a few but nothing like that. I have seen some toned coins go for good money on Ebay but have no idea what to look for in the toning that would make it worth a premium.

ringding: I beleive this is a natural condition but am not sure exactally what causes it. Toning due to heat I beleive will usually look a little different, maybe blueish. But I am in no way an expert on this so don't go quoting me on this ;).

Natural toning comes from sunlight, its a chemical reaction, the stages of oxidation I think. Silver reacting with oxygen and other stuff in the air. Years ago, collectors used to store their coins in paper envelopes as their wasn't the special packaging available then. Different kinds of paper had acids in it, some had sulpher, other chemicals, etc.

Some of the coins stored back then came out with beautiful toning like this one, most (if neglected) came out not so good.

I'm talking about coins from way back, of course. This is a 1967, so its a freak of some sort. Still really pretty though!
