First I will start off by saying hello. New to the site but not new to CRH. I have been doing a lot of dimes and halves lately with ok success but decided to do some cents today as its been ages. I used to sort copper often with the occasional wheatie and was content. I assumed today would be the same as it always has been with a few random wheats and some copper, but I was wrong. I'm still in shock after finding the holy grail of wheat cents. Check it out!!!!! 1909 S VDB.

good cent, hold onto it, early wheat cents are going to be worth as much as the rarest indian heads one day.

EDIT: I cant believe you found a 1909-s, I briefly skimmed it, and wow, its more than just a good cent yo, its one of the best cents out there in existence i don't even have a 1909s in my wheat cent collection

I never thought I would own a 1909 S VDB wheatie.....I dont even know what to do with it. LOL. I put it in a holder and stuck it somewhere safe until i can weigh my options. Grade it? Just keep it raw? Sell it for a fantastic return on my investment of 1 cent!? I have no idea yet.

GRADE IT. Seriously. It's like 30 bucks and if it is real will add hundreds in value, IMO.

If I found that:

Take it to a reputable local coin shop.

Have them judge it.

If it checks out, send it to

PCGS or NGC.

I am going to take it around to a few shops tomorrow and get an idea of what they think of it. What do you think it would grade?

Great Find :) Can't wait to find my first 1909. Oldest wheat I've found was a 1918. But I have found 2 1900 IH so it all evens out ;p

Funny enough, I have only found indian head cents while metal detecting. Never have gotten one while CRH. LOL. This wheat find is still unreal to me!

Banner for sure. I'm sure you turned the reverse over very slowly looking for the VDB?

Absolutely you should get it graded. As said above, it will add big value to the coin.

You absolutely need to send it in for grading and authentication. All known die varieties are known for the S-VDB. Counterfeiters would alter 1909 VDB cents and pass it off as genuine S-VDB cents. The grading services will more importantly authenticate your find. Congratulations on a heck of a find, and I hope it is genuine. Keep us updated, and welcome to TNet.

Update: Quick VDB check indicates that it is indeed an S mint variety. Philly had the second period after 'D' close whereas San Fran had the second period centered.

2nd Update: Other reverse die indicators check out to my eye. It looks like you have the real deal. Congratulations.

Wow, great find. I don't know much about cents, so what is this coveted cent worth in similar condition? HH

I wouldn't care what shop you took it to, but I would not let someone walk away or to a back room with my coin...NEVER let it leave your sight!

Thank you everyone for the comments. I am undecided still about what to do with this coin. I more or less focus on stacking PM's so i have some stuff to learn about getting coins graded. I've checked out PCGS website and apparently you have to be a member or go through a dealer to use them. I just would feel funny handing this over to a dealer (LCS) to send off. I would love to believe that it is that simple and that I will get my coin back fair and square. I've heard horror stories about "lost" coins, fake replacements, ect......
