My boxes don't come in until Thurs. but the addiction was calling so I went out and hit 5 banks on one of my regular circuits. Total halves found $85. Nothing from 4 of the banks but the 5th was a score. Out of $37, I found 28 40%ers and 1 1952 Ben. Now thats a ratio I can live with. Now if the rest of the year goes as well.

Ps: I also scored 23 Ikes from the same bank.

Don, No double dies ane not coins that have been struck twice. A double die is a coin made with a die that itself had been doubled. The dies are struck several times in their creation. If they somehow were out of registration between these strikes they will pick up a doubled image that will be imparted on every coin they strike. The value in the coin is often determined by how many coins were struck and put into circulation before the die was replaced.

Fourth box of the year yielded a Franklin (51p), 64x3, a 65, 67, 68dx7 and 69dx2.

Also found several nice BUs (80p, 94d, 98d) and here's the kicker (again all from the same full box); an 03d, an 05d and 05px8 !

If 02 to present were only released for mint/proof sets, and not for circulation, how come so many keep appearing in rolls. Are that many mint/proof sets being opened up and used for currency ?

They weren't only issued in mint sets and proof sets, you could also buy rolls or bags of the 02-present half dollars directly from the mint (at a premium above face value). They were just never released by the mint for circulation.

Fifth box (of halves) of the year, though "silver-skunked" me, did produce a couple BUs (71D & 72D) and a 97S.

First box of dimes for the year similarly "silver skunked" me, but it did produce two scarce 69Ps.

First box of nickels of the year was a bit better: a war nickel (45P), a 98P I was still missing, some newer "friscos" (68Sx2 and 70Sx5) and a decent amount of other pre-60s (40P, 46Px2, 52P, 53Dx2, 54Dx2, 54S, 58D & 59D).

Time to get another box of halves, they're usually more reliable (and easier on older eyes n )

Sixth box of halves for the year was quite a bit better than the dimes and nickels of earlier in the week.

It produced one Franklin (62D), one 90% Kennedy (64P) and fifteen 40% Kennedys (66x3, 67x7, 68Dx3 & 69Dx2).

Additionally, I found a BU 76D I'll keep, many BU 94s, 96s & 98s I'll practice "catch and release" with and an 06P I'll also keep.

Time to get another box of halves....................

There are die varieties many of us look for, such as the 1974D double die, 1973D double die and the 1977D double.

Basically your saying that the die hit the coin blank twice. I've been through a pile of coins today and have not come across anything like that. What I did find was close to $46 worth of the 1776-1976 halves after going through 32 rolls.

Think statistics.

If you go through x number of boxes, you WILL find stuff sooner or later. I went through many boxes before finding my first Ben Franklin. Same with Proofs and Walkers, though the first proof I found was a 1968-S.

There are also occasional 40% silver proofs you will find (though rare) that were minted up to the present day.

Just like any form of treasure hunting, it sometimes takes awhile, but it is usually worth it in the end, and the fun is in the searching.
