I was just wondering how many proofs are still out there. I know we have all found many half dollar proofs, but what about the other denominations?

Me personaly, I have found a proof nickel and a proof dime aswell.

Exactly what is a proof? Isn't a picture proof enough? I have no clue what a proof is, except I have a bunch of coins marked as proofs that my Dad gave to me before he died. What is a proof?

A proof is a special coin minted only for collectors and not for general circulation.

If you find a proof in a roll it means someone was desperate and HAD to spend it or more likely that a kid broke into his dad's collection and spent the coin on something and the store keeper didn't notice it was a proof and sent it to the bank with the rest of the change.

You can tell it's a proof by the mirrored finish produced by specially prepared dies to give a frosted/mirrored finish to the coin for collector value.It cost's the mint more per coin to make proofs so they only issue them for collectors who pay a premium for it.

If you come across a proof in a roll it will most likely have bag marks/rim nicks etc.

Most proofs you find will have an S mint mark for San Fransisco.

1971-S, 1972-S, 1973-S, 1977-S, 1980-S, 1993-S, 2004-S (Keelboat)

And the following dime that was only issued in a mint set
1996-W

Found 2 '05-S proof nickels in January..............in the same roll.

If a proof becomes circulated, doesn't that negate any value it may have had as a proof or is it a little more valuable because of mintage quantity and mintmark?

It depends on the condition.

For example: A 1995 proof (key date) is worth about $27 in perfect proof condition in a set. The second it is opened and touched it is bound to get at least 1 or 2 tiny scratches and scuff marcs. Now, its value is about $18 in slightly circulated (almost no visible scratches, still looks new). But, if it were to stay in circulation longer and gain visible scratch marcs and finger prints its value lowers significantly again down to $8. A completely worn, circulated 1995 proof half dollar is worth about a buck.

However, a non key date like the 1972 is worth $6 in proof (not circulated). Once it has even a little scratch mark or finger print it will be only worth $1 or $2.

It all depends on date, condition, and buyer.
