Hey everyone, well, today really sucked! So I'm out doing my normal dumping and picking up and I left my last dump bank which is right next to one of my pickup banks, I go into my pickup bank and hand my friendly vault teller my $2000.00 for 4 boxes, she counts it and then runs it through her little counting machine ( which also determines counterfeit bills, I didn't know that), she looks at me and says "did you just get this money before you came here?" I said yes, I just left BofA from dumping coins, she said 2 of these hundreds are fake and I'm sorry but I can't give them back to you, I have to send them to the Secret Service. Ok, so what do I do now I asked her, she said, like a smart ass ( we kid with each other all the time) "well, first you need to give me $200 more for your halves lol and I'll give you some paper work for the bills that you can take back to BofA and show them, hopefully they will work with you, didn't the girl run your money through the machine before she gave it to you? Nope, she just counted it and gave it to me, I didn't think anything of it, so she told me to ALLWAYS have them run it through the counting machine, it checks for counterfeit bills, again, I didn't know that, I thought it was just a counting machine. So she gave me the papers to take to the bank and show them.....

Ok, so I go back to BofA and show the lead teller the papers and explained that I just left there 20 min ago and went across the street to My pickup bank and that when I gave them the money their machine said 2 of the bills were fake, so she starts going into this long drawn out explanation on how all their money comes from the central vault and they check it there and it is impossible it came from them and Blah blah blah, so I stopped her in the middle of it and said listen, they came from here, I just left here with them, your teller didn't run them through her machine, just counted them out infront of me. So she asks if the other bank called the Secret Service to check and see if the numbers came up as counterfeit, I said no, she gave me this paperwork and put the same in an envelope with the fake bills to send them to them. So the lady says she is going to call them real qwik and verify the bill numbers to see if they come up, 20 min later she comes back and says that they are not on the counterfeit bill list and that there is really nothing they could do about it since I allready left them bank with them:icon_scratch:, WHAT! I said listen, if you are telling me that I am out $200.00 because you gave them to me and I didn't catch them before I left your bank, you are OUT OF YOUR MIND LADY! You can't honestly have expected me to just accept that and walk out of here, right? I am not accepting that, so she said, Well, you'll just have to talk to my manger then, ok, bring her over here then, because this is about to get ugly. So the manger came over ( I see and talk to her everyweek when I dump there and pay my mortage), so the lead teller explains everything to her and at the end of it, I say to her you can't expect me to just loose $200.00 right? Because this lady just told me that if they come back counterfiet I'm out the money, which now is making me $200.00 short to pay my mortage with you guys. In the end she asked if I would wait to see what the Secret Service says, if they are good they will send them back to my pickup bank, if they are bad, then we will make the situation right for you Mr so and so. Now I left out the whole argument that the teller who gave me the money came over and started with me and the manger while we were talking, but, she decided to come over and say how it was imposible and she would have caught the bill and how they feel different and if they called and the #'s weren't on the list they're not fake and blah blah blah, I told her that the other bank showed me all that and that the other bank said that if she had just run the money through the counter all of this could have been avoided.

Moral of the story guys, ALLWAYS HAVE THEM RUN YOUR MONEY THROUGH THE BILL COUNTER before you leave with it, right now I;m out $200.00 in CRHing money and have to wait weeks now to only start another fight again with them if the bills do in fact come back as fakes:BangHead:. Hope this advice helps out some of you! HH, Maverick.

My Scout troop was the victim of a $50 fake a couple years ago. Washed out $5 bill that was reprinted so everything checked out until you actually read the embedded strip, which identified it as a $5. It was the bank that discovered it.

Last year we had a couple try to pass a phony $100 at our yard sale but an alert Scout caught it. They grabbed it back, claimed they'd just got it from a local casino, and took off before anyone could catch the license plate.

As already stated the pens only detect the paper. Use a washed out bill and it passes every time. Counterfeiting has grown in recent years and will only get worse. New state-of-the-art printers make possible what once was not. Throw in the resources of various rogue governments and the potential for fraud is huge as far as ultra-realistic bills becoming more prevalent.

Sincerely sorry you got taken like that, Maverick. Do thank you though for the heads up. I did not know that about the counters, always that you had a use a pass-through scanner contraption. Guess I need to stay up on the technology better.

Good point rascal, but the bank especially had an obligation to screen currency, whereas you and your homies due so for good measure, which is why Mav should seriously consider contacting an Attorney. Dawg, in my opinion it doesn't really matter what the scouts get as money, since labor laws are being violated against them as it is by wasting a day without even basic pay. kids working for free while people who don't work collect welfare-should be the opposite.

:unhappysmiley: Your situtation really su___s. I hope BOA does the right thing for you. If they don't, in NY on your homeowner policy there is a coverage colled credit card & depositors forgery protection. It provided coverage for up to $100 for counterfeit money. The bank that confiscates the money has to give you a receipt for the money. You could put a claim in thru your insurance for up to the policy limit for that coverage. Look at your insurance policy to see if you have that coverage on it & what the limit would be. Your could also ask your insurance broker about it. This is another route you could take to see if you could get some if not all of your money back it BOA doesn't come thru.

Good luck & HH

I'm sorry to say this, but they should be more than willing to CORRECT the problem considering it was a LEGAL responsibility for them as a major financial institution to stop the flow of counterfeit money. He should forget about BOA's good faith and find a lawyer to sue the heck out of BOA. If he gets a decent chunk of change, he could donate it to T-net, as thanks for my advice.

Attorney - Google Maps
This should get you started..... Call ANY lawyer and explain the possible case at hand and I guarantee they will file suit against BOA for distributing counterfeit currency.

My precious metal scrap buyer told me he lost a ton on fake hundereds from BOA. He only pays in $50s now. Since he told me that I have only been using $50s, I don't care how many $50s it takes. I have never lost out, yet. I will no longer use $100s. HH

Completely agree. When my wife worked at a bank she saw people fired for not catching fake checks. It should be strictly mandatory that all tellers use the machine and count it themselves. If I were a teller I'd be scared not to let the machine give my counting a second check. If banks that big are gonna let the fakes flow like that what chance does anyone else have of catching them.

Any update on this situation, Mav? I've been checking with my dump banks ever since you posted this. One of them told me they don't even check for fakes and the teller walked me through the process of "checking for myself" (I let her explain just to keep things simple). I was pretty shocked considering this bank seems to have a fairly large regional influence. Another smaller banking system I dump with told me they run all their bills through...so now I know who to trust and who not to.

Ok, so I have been waiting on the papers to come back from the Secret Service saying the bills were in fact fake, well, they haven't showed up, so I talked with my vault teller friend that had to turn them in and told her that BofA wouldn't give me my money back unless I had that paper work, she told me that sometimes they have not sent her back the paper work stating that they are fakes in the past ( this has only happened to her like 3 other times ever), so, I went back to BofA last week and explained this to them, she said the same thing again, they needed the paper work, so I asked her if I could call the Secret Service myself, she said she would give me a number she had for them, and she did. I went home and called the number ( this was this past Wednesday) spoke to a nice lady named Nancy and explained everything to her, she found the submitted paper work from the bank that took them from me after I gave her the bill numbers I had on my copies of the paper work, she then explained to me that they don't send out the verification of counterfeit bills anymore, it is a new policy, but, she said she could email everything I needed to the bank that took them from me, and she did with in 10 min. The vault teller called me top tell me she recieved the email and would print everything out for me to take to BofA when I come in to pick up my halves next Wednesday. So, now I have to go back to BofA next Wed with the papers and see what happens, so this is where it is at now.

As far as making them run the bills through the machine, I always ask them to do it now no matter what, I sure as heck am not going through this crap again if I can avoid it, lol. HH, Maverick.

Man that seems so horrible to have to go through... I never even see the bill counters at my dump bank... they would probably have to go in the back to do it, but usually I dump in 1000$ amounts so I usually get a "pack" which I believe they run through a machine

Hey, yup, it really sucks. The bill counters here are right on the counter, they aren't really that big, about the size of your typical home copy machine for your computer. One branch told me I could buy one of those pens to mark the bill and check but, if it was a washed off 5 or something with a $100 printed back on it the pen would do no good. I will update this thread next week the minute I get home with my halves, hope to post that I got my money back.... HH, Maverick.

As a cashier who handles money everyday I have found a lot of tips. Definitely check your bills for feel. If its too slick or the paper just feels wrong to you, before leaving that particular teller, ask for different bills. No machine or pen will is foolproof. The high end counterfeit are few and far between up here in Michigan, normally we get the knuckleheads who wash out ten dollar bills and reprint them as hundreds or they will try and print 'real' dollar bills on printer paper and pass them along as real. they just caught a guy locally who had the printer and evidence in his truck when he was pulled over. Talk about knucklehead. But our CRH money is precious to us, as precious as the AG we hunt for. Protect it, check, check and triple check. There's nothing wrong in asking for another dollar bill, holding it up to the light to check the watermark and the picture, make sure they match, or checking the diameters of the bill, the feel of it.

sorry about your situation. I haven't run into that before and hope to God I don't. No one should ever have to go through that kind of treatment from tellers, businesses or some joe-smo wanting to pad his pockets illegally.

Sincerely, GarouLady

I had a situation just like yours..

I was at chase and I told him I wanted 20s

I got all the twentys, counted then in my hand but I noticed one looked just a little weird

I took out the fraud pen i had in my bag, tested it and the line was dark not orange. Told the teller immediately when he saw this and refunded the 20, but he continued going on saying that it was authentic... Da fa?

I've thought about this many times, and usually answer this question: "how would you like the $ back?" with "Any bills are fine".... from now on I will not accept any bill above a 20, and may even go to 10's !!!

That will be quite a bit safer, even if it is a bigger load. I carry a small zip bank bag anyways.

Easiest fix and cheapest to me sounds like getting only 20's or maybe 10's back at dump sites.

Please see my posts regarding legal action......... I don't see why you are doing things according to what BofA's policy is.
