Found this little '74 in a roll today. I was sound checking and I heard the tink. It's deeper than a 40% sound but lighter than a 90% sound. I left my darn scale on the desk at work but i did a quick balance test and it's heavier than a 40 but lighter than a 90???

Here is a '64 on top, the '74 the a 40%er at the bottom.

I'll put it on the scale in the am to get an exact weight. Anyone have any ideas to what was done to this or maybe its a fake? ???

possible chrome or silver plate, not a 40%er or 90%er. Your scale is going to give the right answer. HH. It certainly looks silver.

Yes, I would have to agree with palidin and say it is probably silver plated, but def not a silver coin

That's kinda what I was thinking but have never seen a plated before.

My best guess is plated like everyone else but would a clad plated half be heavier than 40%?

Could be a "struck on a foreign planchet" error. I have what should be a clad Kennedy as well that "sounds funny." Its not really worn and toned/corroded a weird yellow. It weighs something like 8.9g. Its not a magicians coin, but I have no idea what it is or what happened to it.

You can tell 100% it's plated because on the obverse the nickel comes through where there is wear. Always a fail proof visual test. Not sure what the plating is but I've found a few that look like this. The sound I can't figure out though, usually plated halves to me sound like clad. might as well weigh it, maybe a plated fake or something weird like that?

Interesting, who nows maybe I'm wrong. I have definitely gotten those weird toned yellow coins like you describe. Even weirder, one of them was a 68. My guess for that color is always very worn/cheap gold plating
