I don't ask for nickels at banks but take all the CWRs that two branches set aside for me, whatever they are.

Found this 43p war nick today - my first ever in the wild. Not much to look at, but oh well. No buffs or V nicks on the wild yet.

Also found a 60 dime, some nickels from the 40s and 50s (not sure why I am saving these), some Canadian and a UK 10 pence.

Shorted badly on a roll of dimes and over $200 in CWR quarters was a bust.

Congrats on the war nickel. I would like to warn you though that finding a V nickel or let alone a buffalo in a CWR is going to be really difficult. I myself have found 3 V's in boxes but none in CWR and out of the 50+ buffs I have found only 1 in a CWR which was a 1936. The war nickel average seems to be the same in CWR and boxes though, mainly because they visually look no different to the un-informed individual.

Congrats again and good luck

Congratulations! Fun to find one like that. I agree with moff347, I have never found a buffalo in CWR but they pop up fairly regularly in $100 bank boxes, I would say I get one every 3 boxes or so.

Regarding your question why you are saving the 40's & 50's, save what you like of course but I forsee the mint changing the alloy from nickel to something cheaper in the near future. When that happens I think there will be an interest in collecting nickels and the demand will rise. It's a small investment to keep a couple hundred dollars in old nickels around and if I am wrong, I have a couple hundred dollars in old nickels that I can deposit.

Congrats on the WN find. That's pretty sweet. I haven't had much problems finding buffs in the wild. I usually get 1 buff and WN per box and I usually get a box of week till recently. the V nicks for me are extremely hard. I have probably searched over 2 thousand in nickels and I have only found 1 so far. I save the pre 1950's nickels just to give myself a bit of an extra fund. After a couple of months I take them to a coinstar and turn them in for an amazon giftcard. So I get the best of both worlds.

Sincerely, GarouLady

Congrats! I have searched about $500 in nickels so far and have found 4 war nickels. 3 of them were in cwr and 1 was in a mwr. I seem to have more luck with cwr. I save 40's and 50's nickels because I just like to hoard coins. Happy Hunting!
