Mentioned to a buddy that I collect coins, and he said he had some wheat pennies from his grandpa. "Wanna sell them?," I immediately but but calmly ask. He says yes and says he has $20 of rolled unsearched wheats, maybe even more if he can find them. After negotiating, he accepted 150% face value. I've only gone through $5 and already there was a 1909, 3 from the teens, 6 1920s, about 20 1930s, about 150 1940s and about 250 1950s. Some good AU condition coins too. Also one 1956 dime, 2 steelies, and a 1930 Canadian cent. I'll post more photos of the coins tonight and give you the full breakdown.

OH! I almost forgot, these wrappers smell like they've been soaked in Old Spice or some other old man grandpa cologne/aftershave. My buddy said, "yup, my grandpa used to bathe in that stuff." Really adds to the connection of these rolls to the original owner. He's looking for another $25 box he says he has - hoping he finds it.

Nice find.. Your buddy really hooked you up.. Glad to see somebody get them all together rather than have them cashed in and broke up.. Congrats.

Yeah, I asked today about other coins, and he said that when his grandpa died they found about $100 face in silver dollars. Unfortunately they were sold years ago. Still targeting those remaining $25 in Wheats, if he can find them.

Do not open anymore rolls. Put them up on ebay to get more out of them. Oh, also put that rosie on one of the end too.

Ha. Yes, in this case, these are truly unsearched wheat rolls and three have had a pre-65 dime in them (1916-D?????????). Couldn't get thru them all last night, but I promise I'll post the final breakdown and pics. These rolls cost me $0.75 each.

You never know what you're going to get. I was given a handful wheat pennies (22¢ to be exact), and I never really looked at them close at the time. When I finally looked at them a couple of years later, one was a 1920S in very fine condition. The local coin shop offered me $25 for it, so I figure it is worth three times that!

It is only worth $2.25 in VF according to the 2013 Redbook.

Ouch. You called him a buddy- then cut him with 1.5 cents a coin... Dang. I'd re-offer 3 cents a piece and hope he takes it as an apology! Seriously, the copper is worth .02 and the opportunity to find a few good key dates would make up the other .01 cent... Oh-well, guess the coins are already in the rolls so karma can't change the dates... Good luck.

Yeah, I'll throw him another $10. He really said he wanted to get rid of them and was glad I appreciated them. They were at his parents' house and they're moving soon, so he said they easily could have been turned into the bank.

BS! If the buddy is happy with the deal, then don't worry about it. It very well may be worth the price difference to the buddy to see his friend enjoying his grandfather's collection.

For example, I just bought a new truck and sold my old one. I sold the old one to a good friend's son, whom I've watched grow from a toddler. He is nearing his 16th birthday and will soon be needing his first vehicle. I took at least $1000 less than I could have gotten for my old truck...because its worth more than that to me to see him enjoy it.

Another good point. I mean, he did ask me if I found any good old ones, and it's apparent he knows at least a little bit about coins but not enough to be a full collector. I think he's glad to see them go to a good home. Tonight i'll finish them and post the results!

Ok - the final numbers are in! Out of 41 rolls (2050 coins):
2 x 1909
19 x teens
26 x 1920s
88 x 1930s
631 x 1940s (12.6 rolls) + 6 AU 1940s
117 x 1943 steelies (2 rolls were solid steel and 17 were mixed)
927 x 1950s (18.5 rolls) + 19 AU 1950s
7 x Roosies (1947, 1949, 1951, 1954, 1954, 1955, 1964)
1 x 1899 Indian Head Cent
2 x possible 1955 DDOs (slight doubling on second 5)
1 x 1930 Canada Cent
1 x 1942 Canada Cent
And probably a few dozen 1959+ cents

And here's a scan of the IH, 1909-1929 cents, and Roosies. Any cents I should put in a flip instead of a tube?
