It's official, I placed my first order today for a box of half dollars at my local bank! Pickup is this Saturday. I've caught the fever!

Rules:
- 1965 - 1970 = 40% Silver
- Pre 1965 = 90% Silver

What other types of half dollars should I be on the lookout for?

All is help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Good Luck. Reminds me of myself, 8 boxes ago. 8 skunks, and po'd tellers. It was still fun, found a few proofs, 1 gold plated. GL

Proofs are minted using polished dies and planchets with no imperfections. Each coin is struck at slow speeds with extra pressure to bring up sharp, high relief details. Proofs are distinguished by their brilliant mirror finish, sometimes with frosted highlights and high relief rims. Since 1968 they have either an S or W mintmark. Here are some pictures to show the difference. The first is a normal clad half and the second is a proof. Hope this helps. Happy hunting!

Thanks, Hunter!

Pre-1968, these proofs didn't exist?

Proofs were made before 1968 they just won't have a mint mark.

How do you detect a proof pre-1968? Will those still be shiny and well-detailed?

Yes. They will have the same details. They just wont have a mintmark.

1975 Kennedy half dollar. Find one and you'll be rich.

Lol for a while when I first started CRH and I never saw a '75 I started thinking they where something special kinda like the '87s and so I was looking specifically for them-

There weren't any 1975 half dollars made.

1987 half dollars were only put in sets so they aren't intended for circulation.

I remember my first box like it was yesterday (skunked on the first). Luckily I stayed with it. 600 boxes later, I've stacked almost 2000 silver coins. Persistence is key.

Holy crap! What do you plan on doing with them eventually? Do you have a goal in mind?
