Just wondering how my fellow CRH'ers figure mileage and gas expense into their pickup schedules. Myself, i only pick up and dump at banks within a few miles of my home. My jeep only gets 15 mpg, so at $3.60 a gallon, driving 15 miles for 2 silver dimes ( i average 1 per box) is a financial wash. I read about guys driving 40 miles or more..... Can get costly.

If you start looking at it that way, you are better off staying Home and buying silver from Apmex. If you look at it as a hobby and you enjoy the thrill of the hunt then the cost doesnt matter.

It's all about:

1. Location- I live in a CRH hub lol
2. Volume- you have to pull at least 50 boxes a week for steady finds (here anyways)
3. Relationships- you need to pull a chunk from the pallet, that means 4k+ from one branch

Then it'll be worth.

8 boxes from 1 branch? Wow. I could never do that. Tellers would hate it.

Of course, start small at 4 boxes, then go to 6 boxes, then 8, then max out around 10 if you can. Helps when another CRH was getting 9 boxes from there for over 2 years lol.

I don't even ask for more than 4 boxes. ..

I burn 3-4 gallons of gasoline a week sometimes as much as 10 gallons if I go on a trip.
It's a losing proposition but aren't most hobbies?

I spend nothing...I only hit banks on my way home from Detecting or work. I have a 35 mile each way commute. So Im around SERVERAL banks in the MetroPlex.
As for dumping. My bank takes the coins in bags, and deposits it back in my acocount within a week.

I can tell you , if they charged me ANYTHING. I wouldnt even bother. I would stick hitting up grocery store banks.

So how is your ratio going? I would hope you arent driving that far JUST to get Coinage...I can walk out of my work at lucnh and find 10+ plus banks within a 5 mile radius. And none of them have a problem giving up a box or 2

I drive 45 minutes each way to get halves(7 box pickup)

Sometimes its worth it, others not.

We dont all have 10+ banks within 5 miles who order boxes :/ otherwise I definitely would not drive that far. Its more like 2 banks in a 15 mile radius who will order boxes, atleast for me.

I agree. I drive 45 miles round trip once a month to pick up a large order. It's worth it in the long run i suppose... but it also takes me 1.5-2 hours to do so.

I wasnt tryign to be cocky or anything. I know in some rural areas, that isnt a possibility. I just saw he was in San Diego, which i would think had tons of banks around the area.

Trust me, sometimes I wish the banks close to me would order, but they just refuse, so I keep driving farther and farther until banks will order :P

I don't factor in gas mileage, wear and tear on the car, or any of that because I don't do it for any of my other hobbies.
