I plans to buy either 10,000 one dollar coins, or $10,000 in value of "$5" gold coins ( which actually cost $170 each)

My question is on volume,,as I need to pack them in a box / chest....

What volume will they take up? One shoe box?, 2 or more? Or any other everyday reference you can give me.

They will be loose, not in rolls I think, although rolls maybe an option.

I thought you guys were the best people to ask as you deal in " coin volumes" every day?

Thanks so much

Well I know if you got $10,000 in half dollars, that would be like 10-15 shoe boxes full. I know your asking about dollar coins, but I've never purchased any rolls of dollar coins. If you are limited on what you are putting them in, your best bet would be to get the $5 gold coins.

Side note, have you had any good finds over there in the BVI? I'm still on St. Thomas but my wife and I are moving back to the states July 1st.

The gold coins will take up a lot less room than the dollar coins. Why in the world would you want 10,000 dollar coins?

$10,000 in $5 gold coins will be 58 or 59 coins. You could literally carry them in your pockets.

$10,000 in $1 coins - assuming you could find them - would weigh approximately 178 pounds, and take up a couple suitcases worth of room, not that the suitcases would necessarily be able to support the weight. However, if you're still in BVI I seriously doubt you'll find a bank willing to order you 10,000 dollar coins.

This of course assumes you're referring to presidential dollars. If you mean Eisenhower dollars, it's closer to 500 pounds, and even more difficult to obtain. Actual silver dollars, fuggedaboutit!

We'll be interested in hearing the story after you complete your plans...

Thanks! I plan to put them in a chest so that would be too heavy / big!

Still in Gorda but travel a lot more these days!

Thanks FT great info!

I will have to change my plans I think.
I wanted to have them in a chest (which I will have made) and them bury them for a children's idea I have.

Go with the gold, less space & resale value. But gold prices do fluctuate as in the past.

go with the dollar coins, you're not losing anything! besides a 5$ gold eagle is soo small. It is not as cool as 10,000 BU/AU dollar coins...
