Last week I exchanged 4 boxes of halves at 4 different dump banks. Each bank I got 5 $100.00 bills. I did not look closely at the bills. When I went to pick up 2 boxes at one of my pick up banks yesterday they informed me that one of the bills was a counterfit. They had already seen 2 others of these older bills this week. For the life of me I can not remember which bank gave me this fake bill. Guess I am out $100.00

How did they know it was fake. The marker test? Looks pretty good from here.

Yes. I thought about that when I was leaving the bank that she should have confenscated it. But, I walked out with it.

I have noticed that most banks won't let you keep fake bills. Also they have updated a lot of their machines and most reject all of the older bills. Most of the time they are real but rejected because of no new technology in them. You might have had a new teller that didn't know the difference.

Series 1977. Has none of the current anti counterfeit features is my bet. Many bill counters that have capabilities to detect counterfeits are actually looking for anti counterfeiting features in the notes. The software is probably good for bills less than 25 years old. Use it at the store, another bank, etc.

You could also take it to a currency expert for an opinion.

It looks okay to me but the photo isn't the best quality. I think it's just an older note without any modern security features. An older, more experienced teller would be able to detect if real without the use of a machine. The note is too old for that. If it was in my hands I could tell you just by feeling the small ridges or outlines of the ink. Old notes can look fake if they have been through the washing machine too.

Just be careful spending it unless you are 100% sure it's genuine. It is illegal / a federal crime to possess and / or spend a counterfeit bill. If they come back & prove that you knew it was counterfeit (even tho a bank passed it off to you), you can be prosecuted.

:coffee2: FYI if a bank confiscates the bill as counterfeit, have them give you a receipt for the bill. You can put a claim in for it under your homeowner policy under the "Credit card & Depositors Forgery Protection" coverage. It will normally cover you for up to $100 for counterfeit money with no deductible.

Here's a fake $100 that I confiscated as a pharmacy manager from a scammer a while back. It's pretty good. Actually printed on a bleached $5 bill. You can see the Lincoln hologram and it has a five dollar security strip instead of one hundred. I wrote "counterfeit" on it so I didn't accidentally spend it.

Wait, why didnt the other bank realize it was counterfiet before they handed it off? Things arent adding up and i think that its probably real and as said before the machine couldnt read older bills.

It was either a Wells Fargo or a Bank Of The West that I got it from and a Wells Fargo that told me that it was fake. I am going to have to find someone other than a bank to look at it and verify real or fake.

After looking at your bill and looking more closely at mine I do think it is fake as you can see a faint 12 behind every 2

Looks good to me as well. Great shape for an older boll. MOST banks will keep a fake bill. Think she didn't want to deal with the older style.

If you have one of those very strong magnets, you can run it by the collar or breast of Ben. While holding the bill on one end. The magnet should pull the bill a little, it sould look like a very gentle breath of air just hit the bill. Most counterfeiters don use magnetic ink.

If you have access to an older BFO detector you could run it by the coil to determine magnetic ink or not.

I don't have a strong magnet or a BFO detector.
I think the 12 under the 2 pretty much tells me it is a $100.00 printed over a bleached out small denomination bill.
