Best box in a long time. The Seated Liberty is in pretty rough shape. Very hard to read the date. I'm pretty sure it is an 1858 s. Whatever the date it is my first SL. So, I am thrilled.
The box gave up.

I'll bet. Someone on here will be able to tell you how to clean that seated up. Have you posted it in any other forums here?

This coin looks like it has been through quite a bit. I think I am going to leave it just the way I found it.
The really cool thing about this half is that 1858 is the year my Great-Great-Great (I think that's right) grand parents arrived in San Francisco. They went through the gold rush in Grass Valley (They owned a supply store there) lost it in a poker game that was run in the back room. Moved to S.F. in 1858. My relative could have been the first person to possess this half. It will go on to one of my children.

Welcome to the club! Nice box!
By the way, can you weigh the seated to
make sure it's not a cast modern copy?
I found a cast Barber half.

It's always a fun thing to find a piece of old U S HISTORY. Makes one begin to wonder, who may have touched it, where in the world it may have traveled, etc., wouldn't it be nice to see if a DNA analysis could be done on a coin that old. A lot of my old coins make me think of things like that mentioned. Congrats on your relic find.

:occasion14: Even thought it's in bad condition, Great Find Steve. Congrats! My best oldest find so far in a box was a 1893 Columbian commemorative & oldest regular half was a1908 Barber. The Seated Liberty club is still 1 I'm waiting to join. That would have been a great box even without the Seated Liberty.
