4 boxes today. Question about silver content in boxes.

Picked up two boxes of halves today.

1st box, had two silvers showing on the tops of the rolls. Ended up with 10- 40%

2nd box, had 1 silver showing. Ended up with 4- 40%

3rd box, None showing. 7- 40% with a very nice 70D silver only my 2nd one

4th Box, none showing. SKUNK!

Has anyone noticed a corilation to the number of silvers showing to the overall % of silver in the box.
Had a box a couple weeks ago with 2 walkers, 1 frnk and 12 other silver showing when I opened the box. And got 93 silvers.

Seems that for each silver showing on top of the rolls =.5% of the total box
1= 5
2=10
15=75

Just an observation, But it seems to work out most of the time. Let me know what your results are.

For what it is worth - my best box had no silver showing. I found 25 silver halves in it.

It should work out most of the time.

Assuming $500 half dollar boxes made up of 50 $10 rolls, the ends of the rolls are essentially a random sample of 10% of the coins in the box. 50 rolls * 2 coins showing per roll = 100 coins out of a 1000 coin box.

In the long run the number showing on the ends should be 10% of the total silver found. Each box may be different due to randomness, but if you add all boxes together the total should be 10%.

In other words what's showing on the ends is typically a good indication of what's not showing. The same can be said for other denominations as well, but the number showing is a smaller percentage so it is less accurate.

pennies 100 of 2500 = 4% showing (25x)
nickels 100 of 2000 = 5% showing (20x)
dimes 100 of 2500 = 4% showing (25x)
quarters 100 of 2000 = 5% showing (20x)
halves 100 of 1000 = 10% showing (10x)

The number in parenthesis is the number to multiply the number showing by to get a theoretical total for the box. For example, for pennies my high wheat box of 69 had 4 showing (4x25 = 100 in theory). As I said this is only true over the long run and not every box will align with this theory, but all in all it is a good indicater.

I had a box with none showing and got 15 Walking Libertys out of it. Congrats on your second 70D. That's a tough one to get

My best box had almost 60 silvers with 4 walkers and 4 bens and none showing on the ends. I've also had 1 or 2 boxes with 1 - 3 showing and that was all that was in them.

Interesting hypothosis. I bet you're onto something, but I don't pay much attention to the ends of my rolls. In fact, I'm quite the contrary. I'll see no silver looking out and then try to convince mysef that it's nothing to worry about. haha.

Ron, I find the more silver showing the better the results, and I always look at the tops and then flip them over and check the bottoms. If Ben is showing, I save that box for my kids to open.

Congrats on the 1970-D, in over a year I still haven't found one.

Now the important question, Cubs or Sox?

Of course when I get my box out to my vehicle at the bank, first thing I will do is check the ends.

It is a nice drive home when I know for a fact I will be finding at least one silver in the box. But then, every time I have seen just one on the end, I have always found more than just that one when I searched the rest.
