So today being a veritable scorcher outside (around 100° with enough humidity to give you a shower) I decided to do some roll hunting, so I stopped at the bank and bought a box of pennies and a box of nickels.
The cents produced as expected...17 Wheaties. I worked on the nickels and man, I was getting skunked. The best I could show were two late Forties examples.
On the third to the last roll, when I broke it open, something way different caught my eye. At first I thought it was a foreign coin. No way, I said to myself, as I picked it up. An 1883 Shield Nickel!
It's well worn and maybe worth $8-10 on a good day based on condition and the guides I have seen, although I could be wrong. I saw there is a scarce 1883/2 variety, but I can't make anything like that out.
No matter what the value is, it was an awesome find to me.
