I went to a local coin shop that's going out of business. The guys that work there are great guys, known them for years. I asked if they had any silver they wanted to get rid of, and he said he might have one but it's in pretty bad shape. This is the coin that was brought out. I bought it for $1.40. Please tell me that's a D on the back!

If a coin dealer sold you a 16d dime for $1.40, it sure explains why they are going out of business...

Yea, looks like someone tried to do an amateur job in doctoring the coin...
IMO, not what you want it to be...

Looks like a D, but I believe it's in the wrong position, and IMO is not commensurate with the wear of the rest of the coin. I'd say what you have there is a real 1916 Merc dime with a fake D, worth about what you paid for it.
