Silver 1976-77 Halves

How can you tell if a 76 half is silver? Do they look like other 40% halves? Also, in what form were they made, special proof sets or something? Thanks.

Look at the rim. You can easily distinguish between silver and CuNi clad because a silver coin is lacking the copper colored layer. Extremely dirty silver coins can sometimes be difficult to distinguish. Another way is to drop the coin against a known clad coin. Silver coins make a different noise than clad. The noise has a higher pitch.

They will also have an S mintmark and yes, they were made for proof sets.
