Here is the story...

My great uncle was in the SS (I'm not exactly proud of that but, there was some poetic justice dealt his way). He was able to settle in the US. Occaisonally he would go back to the Mother country. He smuggled this coin/medallion out in July of 1969. My grandmother gave it to my son for christmas this year and I cannot find squat about it. If any body can help with any info I would appreciate it.

Just realized I put this under collections and meant to put in under the other coins section.

It's a gold medal of some sort.
Very nice, though that's about what I can find. Maybe someone else will add more.

My guess is you got a nice, 1 oz gold coin! The Deutsche Numismatik is an umbrella organization for German coin collectors. In 1969, the dollar to mark conversion was 3.66 marks / 1 dollar. At the total price of 149.85 marks for the coin, the (1969) conversion for dollars would be about $41. Amazingly, the 1969 price for 1 ounce of gold was about $41!

A quick check of google turns-up many Kennedy-ish coins offered for sale thru Deutsche Numismatik. I was not able to find your specific coin.

Not sure how your uncle in the SS relates to all this. I actually thought you were leading in to the old joke- My uncle died in a concentration camp.... He was drunk and fell out of the guard tower and broke his neck. Ba-da-boom! Try the veal. We're here every weekend!
