This coin was given to me 20 years ago by a dear friend. How can you tell if it is real or not?I know restrikes were made for the 1876 Continental expo but how can you tell the difference?I had a coin dealer tell me it was a restrike but then he offered me $75.00 Any input appreciated,Thanks

Well it isn't one of the usual cheap souvenir replicas. Is there a casting seam, a line ,around the rim? What are the copper colored spots? It may be a good idea to have someone knowledgable look at it. Not all coin dealers would qualify as knowledgable, especially in colonials.

I don't see a a seam anywhere on the edge or the rim. As far as the rust color ,It's from my friends little boy(He was about 5 at the time) and a red crayon.I did'nt bother cleaning off.

According to Alan Kessler (The Fugio Coppers Newtonville, MA; Colony Coin Company, 1976), there are at least fifty-five varieties from twenty-four obverse dies and thirty-three reverse dies. These varieties are categorized into three different groups based on the style of the rays emanating from the sun.
Add to that the number of fantasy or replicas created of this coin then I agree with Cutler regarding getting a competent examiner to determine what you have.
Good luck,
Don....
