One more look:

Top image, my coin

2nd image, known 1916 - S

3rd image, known 1916 - D

Look at the difference in the placement of the D and S.

Anyone change their mind?

Don't you have the last two reversed? You should post pictures of good examples of the S and D to compare, too difficult when you have to guess at the found coin and comparison one.

Yes, I edited that. I was trying to compare apples to apples.

I think I'll send it for grading. It's a gamble but it would pay off nicely if it came back as a D.

I think you have a good point if the spacing is different, but like I said it would be so much easier to tell if it was a good pic of the S mint.

think its a high and tight S --but I agree its up tight and close by the leaves similar to the way a D mint mark would be, but it seems curved to me on top like a "s" mark would be

There was more than one die used in any given year and placement of the s would vary from die to die. Look at the shape of the top of the mintmark on your coin, I am pretty sure it is an s. If you are unsure by all means have it authenticated for your peace of mind!

It's an s. Remember, there were more than 1 die used so position doesn't matter. Each one was punched into the die by hand. Sorry.

I, also, believe it to be an "S". If you look at the speck of the letter that is seen, it has the rounded look of the "S" instead of the well- squared corner of the "D". Also, if you zoom in on your first picture, you can see the upper serif of the "S".

I believe it to be an S, the portion showing does not have the upper left portion of the D mintmark. As mentioned, there were more than one die used so you can not use placement of the mintmark to indicate which one it is.

If it were my coin I would not spend the money having it slabbed as I really believe it to be an "S" but if you do send it I hope I am wrong. :icon_thumright:
