The U.S. Senate voted on Thursday, Dec. 2 to pass H.R. 6162 a measure to allow research authority for alternative coinage materials, a measure supported by the National Automatic Merchandising Association (NAMA). The legislation allows the Secretary of the Treasury to research and develop alternative coinage material. However, the Secretary must consult vending machine and coin acceptor manufacturers, and "may not include any recommendation for new specifications for producing a circulating coin that would require any significant change to coin-accepting and coin-handling equipment to accommodate changes to all circulating coins simultaneously."

Well, at least they won't be made out of aluminum. Although that would be better than some of the alternatives, it wouldn't disintergrate like zinc. It's gonna have to be something with some weight to it so the machines to still accept them, hmmm......ahhh I got it, pot metal clad! It's cheap and heavy and surely worthy of making our coins out of. ::) Another prime example of the U.S. Gov. and it's uselessness.

well folks crappy steel coated "american" clad coins coming soon -- similar to canada's coins -- the candains have been "reclaiming" the valuible metals in their coinage since 2000 to make money -- replacing their good coins --with coated steel slugs basically --- no metal detectors need to find those babys --only a powerful magnet

sadly with things the way they are fiscally these days ,here in the good ole US of A i figgered it was coming sooner or later.
