Was diving some blackwater today and found a coin! First out of this area. The coin was found right beside some ships pattern pottery and beside a piece of "ironstone pottery" which I've discovered is from England and was primarily used in the early 1800s. I can tell that there is some kind of inscription on the coin but it's too dirty to tell. I know I shouldn't scrub it but would like some advice on cleaning. I don't even know what kind of metal it is, so I don't know what type of cleaning to attempt. My guess is silver. Please advise.
Thanks!

okay, well i think you will need a pic for an ID first of all. i am not sure what you mean by it not being highlighted. you cant just click the button and select the picture?

as for cleaning it, try a magnet first to see if it is iron. lets just say not many coins were made of iron
might want to try
1. dropping it into hydrogen peroxide that was heated until boiling in the microwave and leaving it in until it stops bubbling (days)
2. leaving it to soak in olive oil and then every other week or so taking it out an softly scrubbing it with a soft bristled toothbrush
3. leaving it soak in acetate

all of the above will not damage the original coin and will only take off organic material like dirt. but first just try rinsing it under warm water

good luck

I can't push the "choose file" button. It's grey, not highlighted. Maybe it has something to do with my iPad?
Thanks.
