What happened to this dime?

Got this today in some change and just wondered what happened to it. It looks like the silver is coming off

I'd hang onto it. From the pic, it looks like the coating was super thin or the copper core was thick. Don't know about value, but it's neat.

It appears to be missing part of the nickel clad layer (not silver) and is a mint error, but the most valuable are when the clad layer is completely missing on one or both sides. FYI modern dimes, minted for circulation, have a copper planchet, and are clad in nickel.
