Its a Matron Head Large Cent which were made from 1816 to 1835.

Obviously, this coin is from 1834.
There are 4 varieties for 1834 listed in the Red Book. They are:
1834 Large 8, Large stars, Large Reverse Letters
1834 Large 8, Large stars, Medium Reverse Letters
1834 Large 8, Small stars, Medium Reverse Letters
1834 Small 8, Large stars, Medium Reverse Letters

And although I am not an expert on large cents, I believe yours is the Large 8, Large Stars, and Large Letters variety.

Also I believe the coin would grade at about Very Fine.

I only have a 2005 copy of the redbook, in there the 1834 Large 8, Large stars, Large Reverse Letters Large Cent in VF-20 is $175 coin.

In XF-40 its listed as $500 and in F-12 as $70. (and I am sure all prices are higher now than in 2005).

Note: the other varities for the 1834 are listed from $26 to $450 in F-12 all the way to $125 to $2750 in XF-40. With such a wide range in prices, you probably will want to get the expert opinion of someone knowledgable you trust for both identification and grade.

Either way, nice find.

GMan,

Thank you for the info, the coin is just how it was pulled from the lake, other than being dried off. Did not do anything to change the way it looked. To me it could be worth 2K and I wouldn't sell it as it is the first coin of it's kind that I ever found while diving.

Thanks Again,

Don

wow that coin is in amazing shape!!! :o :o :o

You should put that in a protective sleeve or something. Have it sealed up. I believe it would grade closer to 40 than 30, but who knows. Doesn't matter really I guess :)

Whatever you do, don't try to clean it..haha.

I have it in one of those two piece plastic coin sleeves -disks. Keep it in there all the time and don't let anyone handle the coin without it being protected from their hand oils -corrosive

I was trying to decide between VF and XF. Decided to leave it on the conservative side.
