1882CC Morgan...what's it worth?

It is for sale by a guy who needs money for bills and curious to know what it would be worth. What do you guys think high end I should PAY for this? Really would be one of my first Morgan buys. Also has original box with certificate (if that matters?) Thanks all!

I'm always leary about people that "Need Money" for reasons and selling this. IF you know the seller, than maybe its different story. I see them range from 150-200....I would stay on the low end of that.

After some research, the box looks correct. The Chinese counterfeiters use a different type of box. However, Examine it carefully for signs of tampering. If there are no signs of the box/seal being tampered with, then it is probably genuine, butlways err on the side of caution.

I would be around $150-$165 for that coin. Problem is, and it has been said by everyone, the Chinese are getting sneakier every day. I would take it to a lcs and have it at least verified by a "pro" before pulling the trigger.

Also, if your intention is to buy and then re-sell you will need to get it authenticated by a TPG or else you will have little chance at getting top dollar for it. Authentications cost from around $35 on up, so take that into account when you buy it.

2. Look at the first "C" in Carson. Look at the top right of the C. It should have a very well defined serif. The fakes look like the line just fades into the "bar" of the seriff. It looks sloppy, and there is a pronounced curve where they meet. The genuine C should look like the line of the C smoothly cuts into the bar of the seriff at a defined angle very cleanly.
3. Examine "UNCIRCULATED". A genuine GSA holder will have the letters very close together, almost touching.


The top one is fake.
The bottom one is genuine.

The GSA dollar posted above by the OP looks correct but please double check based on my descriptions above to be sure. Good luck.

The bottom pic with the crooked "E" is the real one ? I believe you, just surprised that the government would let that through. I have an almost complete collection of Morgans myself but no GSA coins.

I posted the picture because I agree that the genuine one looks worse than the fake one... Have to see it to believe it.

Thanks everyone for all the information! He's asking $200 for the coin...and also has some other Morgans for sale that have been PCGS certified....so one would THINK the uncirculated is real. But I will more than likely have it taken to a lcs to verify!

That's good research Ben. The OP's holder does look good as does the coin at a glance but it's better to be safe than sorry. I'd get a second opinion myself too, if I was not confident in my abilities to discern between the two in person that is.

Diggum, it is in my opinion that we must not blame counterfeiters for destroying this fine hobby. We must blame ourselves.

If we do not arm ourselves with knowledge, then we will surely allow the counterfeiters to win.

I agree that we must educate ourselves if we want to do any good in this hobby that we all enjoy, but if it's all the same to you I am still going to blame those dirty losers!

Off topic but i'll say it... We should not be doing business with China anyway. Not that it would help with the influx of counterfeit goods because they would just get imported via another country anyway, probably. But I agree, knowledge is power!

For what it's worth the 1882 is one of the more common of the GSA CC's, most of the fakes I have seen have been rarer dates. Got 5 1885 CC's off Ebay this week that all stuck to a magnet.....thought I had found my best score yet! Oh well, I'm out $2 for the return shipping.
