Found this for sale in a local ad for $1350.. I don't know anything except what I've looked up just now online pertaining to values.. but it seems like this is way undervalued, right? Unless I'm missing something. If it grades anywhere near what he claims.. it's worth way more I think.

So the questions are is it really worth what he's asking and is it authentic?

Claims he is also a detectorist and will consider trades for a DUES or Minelab.

I guess I should also mention he has two other coins for sale, but they seem to be relatively closer to their actual value.

1878 CC seated dime for $275

And a 1932 D Washing Quarter (Uncirculated) for $135

Any input on these as well? Thanks ahead of time!

You didn't mention the price he is asking for the Merc.

Now, if I had one of those I'd send it in to PCGS for professional grading and slabbing - and then put it up for sale. That way there is no question as grading is subjective.

There's one heck of a difference between an amateur's grading, and the grading by a professional.

Ha, so I did forget the price! *edited* He is asking $1350, but I'm seeing a VF that sold for $3800+ on eBay? So even if he's off by that much grading-wise.. unless I'm missing something.???

And I 100% agree, even if I didn't sell, grading would be a must IMO.

Welcome to America, if it appears to be too good to be true, then it probably is...

Maybe I'm just cynical.

This is true - a lot of the time - but being the treasure hunter that I am I can't say I haven't found my share of bargains :skullflag:

Bargains can be had, but so can suckers!

I'm certain that I am cynical now.

Sometimes you're the windshield; other times, the bug.

More often than not though I find myself playing the windshield of a semi. :P

USA Coinbook Trends for MS60 is $13,426 ! So maybe it was a typo in the ad price ?

The only thing I can think of is that maybe it is stolen goods.

A legitimate seller must be aware of the value - something is very wrong here.

I once owned one. NEVER buy this coin without it being slabbed! 262 thousand minted, but over a million collectors have one! Most I see, including mine, have a rotated die. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole!

Well then let me ask this - how about the other two coins he has for sale?Any reason to believe those are counterfeit as well?

He's asking too much for the dime and quarter is absolutely not uncirculated. Both appear to be genuine. Appears to be someone that has no clue about coins. I would save my money, but do what you want.

If it was graded I would pay double that and flip it times 8. Something tells me it is a modern fake and come from China. There is a huge industry there faking US coins. Should be a $16,000 coin.

I saw one yesterday that was in a case, wasn't graded but said cleaned. It was in Fine condition by looking at it. He had $475 on it. He also had a 1885 CC Morgan in a 2x2, looked in VF condition, had $875 on that. I would trust those coins over this 1916. Something just doesn't look right.

I am NO expert, but I believe anyone who detects, and finds a 1916 D, would look it up, and when the value is shown, would more than likely send it in to be graded and put into a slab, so as to leave no question as to the grade and value. In this case? buyer beware.

I read once in a coin magazine , where at a coin show more than half the 16 D Merc's were Fakes. Soooo.?

IMO Such coins deserve , Better Staples, on their Flip. That's a red flag to me.
