Probably lucky to get $40 in that condition, but it's an amazing find!

Checking ebay sold listings, probably more like $15, that is really severe damage. As stated though, still a great find.

It is sad that the coin has damage and that the 1878-S Liberty Seated Half Dollars are no longer as rare as they were back in 2008 when Heritage sold an EF-40 graded specimen for $74,750 which included the Buyer's Premium! Back then, the 1878-S Liberty Seated Half Dollars very seldom came on the market via any venue. There must have been a hoard that hit the markets since 2008 because that even with market corrections, it is hard to believe that the market for these Half Dollars took such a hit.
