Hey all, picked up coins at estate sale. Found this one. As you can see the front has a lot of "gouges?" What's interesting is on the reverse the one from under Ben's hair is creating bump on left top of bell, and the ones on his face slightly show through bell. Unfortunately, bell lines also have tics. Thanks in advance for opinions!

It is just damage, and the fact that they show through on the other side of the coin help confirm it. When the coin is in the dies, the damage could not bulge the other side out, that can only happen after the coin has left the dies.

Cutler is correct. Post mint damage.

A bit of advice that can be very helpful should you have a continuing interest in errors: Learn everything you can about the process of manufacturing coins. From metallurgy to sheeting to blanking to minting, and everything in between. Learning how dies are made, and how they were made in the past will also be helpful.

You see, knowing how a coin is made makes finding errors much easier.

Time for more coffee.
