Counterfeit US Quarter?

I picked this up from a Coinstar reject tray two months ago. At a quick glance it looks like a North Carolina US quarter, but look at the edge and it's obvious why the machine rejected it: it appears to be two coin halves cemented together. It is not from a single planchet and no edge ridges.

The details are also not as sharp and there is more pitting than usual for a modern quarter.

My question for everyone is what is this and why would someone do this?

Most likely it has been subjected to some sort of acid. It will hit the copper core more so than the copper nickel outer layers.

There are several acids that will attack the copper layer aggressively, leaving a somewhat frosted appearance on the cupronickel layers.

Time for more coffee.

I have dug them at salt beaches buried in the wet salt sand and in the water.

I think I still need to study. I am new to this field. Will you help?

There are a lot of very knowledgeable folks on here and they’re generally willing to help. Study away... read the old threads. There’s a lot of good information interspersed with funny and snarky comments. If you have questions, fire away.

Kindest regards,
Kantuck

It really doesn't need more study. The coin was subjected to acid and the copper was eaten away. End of story.
