Students claim police chief who shot himself was careless

RIVERDALE, Utah (AP) -- The police chief who shot himself in the ankle was waving a loaded pistol and being careless, according to two students who were attending his class to qualify for a concealed-weapons permit. "We were told the gun is the chief's personal sidearm, but it looked to me like he didn't know anything about the gun," Lewis Walker said.

Bart Ulm, another student seeking certification to carry a concealed weapon, said he was surprised Chief Dave Hansen was using a loaded gun to show how it worked.

"Right then, I was very leery, because there's no need to have live ammo in a gun in the class. But I figured he's the chief, so he must know what he's doing," Ulm told the Standard-Examiner of Ogden.

Hansen held the Glock 40 under a table to disassemble it when a bullet fired, Walker said.

The chief cried, "I'm hit," and fell over. Students who were screaming "Officer down!" were urged to call 911 :D

Walker said he didn't have confidence in the investigation.

"I think Riverdale police are just trying to keep this quiet and act like the chief is a hero ? But if you ask me, he's really stupid," Walker said. "His state certification to teach concealed-weapons classes should be taken away from him. This was totally gross negligence."

Ulm said there was a moment of levity during the emergency.

He said an officer at the scene joked that "instead of shooting himself, he should have used the Taser."

i read that he was unfamiliar with the firearm they were using
instead of passing it to student loaded
he unloaded it (took the mag out)
forgot/didn't cycle the slide
the gun was still in battery
then pointed at the floor
and pulled the trigger
last i checked cops carry loaded guns ::) :icon_study:

Years ago as I walked into a hardware store I say a kid of about 12 or 13 turn in a semi-circle pointing a Baretta. I immediately hit the deck...and every one who witnessed this event laughted at me.

Somewhat pi$$ed, I grabbed the gun from the kid and shoved it in the face of the manager. After learning their new (&%$@#&) names, I gave both a verbal dressing down on gun safety...

Then I got a few 'atta-boys' from the crowd...I gave them a similar tirade.

Just a buncha ignorant a-holes.

If you don't know anything about handling guns, then don't touch them.

What's the first rule of firearm handling?

THE GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED!!!!!!!!

What a freaking idiot!

I agree if the man was unfamiliar with the gun he should never have picked it up.

We would be reading a whole different set of headlines if he had capped a student instead of his own ankle.

Go to any police firing range and count the holes in the roof then count the chips in the floor. You be amazed.

I don't think so. His head went Sidways & hit the ground
when she Fired
but during the Last Second he's on his Elbows or lifting
his head up, & looking at her

From what I recall she missed hitting the guy. I recall reading a post somewhere she is no longer gainfully employed at LVPD

The best video is the DEA Agent telling kids about guns and caps himself in the leg.

How he was given a badge, still astounds me

Did the Chief get put on administrative leave? Also, some agencies & security companies in Arizona show this video. If I was the DEA agent, I think if I was that stupid, I'd rather be fired. Don't think I'd wanna live with the never ending ribbing let alone trying to find a partner that would want to work with me. Could you imagine trying to effect an arrest or make entry into a building with this guy behind you?!?! Can you say permanent desk jockey ::) ::)

Barney Fife was never funny - he was stupid. The law enforcement officer who accidentally shot himself wasn't funny, either - he, too, was stupid. Some people find the stupidity of others to be funny - probably because it makes themselves look less stupid.

I think I just Found a Litttle More Respect for you :P

That's why you never carry your weapon tucked in the front of your pants! You'll surely mess up the kickstand! Gotta have the kickstand!

Don't get it?

You know why women never sleep on their sides? They don't have a kickstand :tongue3:

Wrong, we women don't sleep on our sides because we don't want you men to "accidently" poke us with your kickstands while we're sleeping. :D

Wow, this thread sure went off-topic in a hurry. :icon_scratch:
So that's where bundling came from? ::)

Hey TT you don't have to worry, you got enough respect here to last you two lifetimes!!!!

That's an old clip before Floyd had his stroke. Notice that Andy was having a really hard time keeping a straight face. Ya gotta love Barney! If there were no Barneys in the world, we'd be sitting here wondering what to post about & wondering why our coffees getting cold.
