Loud signal, No VDI reading

Why is it that I'll get a loud signal, but no VDI number shows up on the screen?

That usually happens with deep targets and audio reponse set relatively high (> 5). The machine will process the deep target tone ID (which is a more coarse indicator of target conductivity because even with full tones there are only 32 tones across the entire target conductivity spectrum vs. 100 numerical TIDs) but leave the visual TID blank. It is usually a reliable ID even if you can't get a TID # to register on the display. A high audio response setting means that deep targets will have the same volume intensity as shallow targets. Lower the audio response to < 3 if you want deeper targets to sound more faint than shallow ones.

What were your settings? Did you dig the target?
