March 20, 2006 - The NOAA Space Environment Center is the nation's first defense against the effects of solar weather and the official source of space weather alerts and warnings. "It can be difficult for people to believe that space weather can affect life on earth, but in fact it can have a tremendous impact on communication and navigation systems, satellites, electric power grids, and astronauts working and living in space," said Larry Combs, space weather forecaster at the NOAA Space Environment Center in Boulder, Colo. Space weather describes the conditions in space that affect Earth and its technological systems. Space weather is a consequence of the behavior of the sun and the nature of the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. The solar disturbances categorized in space weather storms are: Radio Blackouts, Solar Radiation Storms and Geomagnetic Storms. These storms can interfere with the normal operation of radio communications used by airlines and emergency response teams, military detection or early-warning systems, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), satellite components and spacecraft operations. Solar storms also have the potential to impact large power transformers and even cause a large-scale blackout in North America. Solar storms also create a biological threat to both astronauts and people flying in aircraft at high altitudes and latitudes.

Instruments on board the NOAA Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellite (POES) continually monitor the power flux carried by the protons and electrons that produce aurora in the atmosphere. SEC has developed a technique that uses the power flux observations obtained during a single pass of the satellite over a polar region (which takes about 25 minutes) to estimate the total power deposited in an entire polar region by these auroral particles. The power input estimate is converted to an auroral activity index that ranges from 1 to 10.

The above info is putting you on the right track to be able to mentally dowse.
You have three problems ahead of you. Firstly, is the flare discharging in your direction? NOAA doesn't always tell you this. It might be only be available in Canada or Timbuktu.

Secondly,Is it strong enough to dowse and dig by? not necessarily so.

Thirdly, headgear is essential. In the cloudless day time, UV Rays destroy all vestige of dowsing. The muscle that allows you to dowse is called the Cerebellum Cortex inside the skull at the top of the ear, opposite side to your dowsing hand and rod.. Protect it from being cancelled out with a wide brimmed hat or a beanie.

There is a fourthly, make sure your entire body is under a moon which reflects the magnetic rays from the sun, as for some reason there is insufficient power to directly dowse. Under a tree or in the shadow of a building will wipe you out.
Night time is also beaut.

You may have to time your dowsing for when the moon is in a position that it is over your body? say in between trees at noon.Quarter moon thru to the full moon and back to quarter moon is OK.

The above rules, which all must be obeyed will soon be proved, and you can help me shout down the skeptics. I cant help it if the magnetic flux passes thru a tin roof, or is improved in a plane or car. Let the experts nut this enigma out. Max
