(I think there are more)

Maybe if I quit traveling around and moving from state to state, I wouldn't have had so many  But, a couple of those overlap - Photography & real estate through it all, and worked up to 3 jobs at one time. (need an emoticon for "man, I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore).

My favorite: Mining. Hard work, love seeing the yellow stuff at the end of the day. But, I guess, since it is for ourselves, and I LOVE it, I don't feel like that is a job.

2nd favorite: I still buy & sell real estate - but again, for myself.

I tried most of the usual jobs for kids, everything from picking strawberries to peddling stuff around our small town. Tried one or two unusual ones, too: collecting and selling fossils, helping set and run trotlines (Do not post that old joke! :D), etc.

I got my first real job at 16, working for several years as a radio announcer. In my spare time I also hung out at a couple of local newspapers, getting a crash course in ink-and-grease journalism.

After college I taught high school English, and occasionally speech and journalism. During that period I began freelancing on the side, and that proved to be my undoing.

For over 25 years now I've worked as an editorial consultant, "a truly challenging and rewarding profession" which occasionally pays almost as much as picking strawberries. could you please e-mail every current news commentator in massachusetts and tell them there is no such word as aamediatly

Some people never learn. ::)

Are you kidding? I'm from Arkansas, where an anchorette, alluringly smiling her way through the mysteries of the morning news, announced a development in a local murder case: "Authorities in Fort Smith say that an autopsy will be performed on the alleged deceased in Little Rock later today."

Well, that ought to settle the question! :D

But we digress. Let's hear about some other members' job histories. (Surely someone can cheer me up about mine!)

Okay, let's see if I remember...

12 to 14 mowing grass, working for a slave driver at the local general store, then me and another kid hand-dug a swimming pool (payment was that we could come swimming anytime we wanted, then the b-st-rd sold the house months later and we never got to go swim).

Worked weekends doing clean-up at a sawmill, then running machines until graduation.

Then college for a commercial art course. Years of silk screen work, graphic design and dark room work followed, then back to college for a media program. Years ensued working as a photographer, dark room technician and media producer (video & multi-image, yes I'm am the ultimate AV nerd).

Then 15 years ago I gave my head a shake, moved from the city to a tiny interior town, started picking up jobs doing carpentry, then silviculture work, fighting forest fires, cutting core samples for a mining exploration company and during that time I landed the ultimate dream summer job...

Every summer I get to go to work at the local ghost town (Quesnel Forks) and help lead a crew in the restoration/maintenance effort. We're the only people allowed to dig and all the finds for the last 14 years formed the basis for the local museum.

*Pardon me while I try and wipe the smile off my face.*

Oh yeah, and I've finally forgiven the guy with the swimming pool. ;D

GreyDigger,

I would really like to hear about the O-rings - how did you put your name on one?

It's got to be cool to have something you did go into space!!

Mrs. O,
I put my ham call sign on the outside of the interior groove that the "O" rings nested in.
And then smoothed them out, this was hard to do and am proud of it.
In those days pissed off some engineers because I would not tell them how anything was done.
Would take 3 years to teach Mech Engineers out of school to do their job.
Picture this :
[ <- ]

arrow is pointing at the inside of an o-ring groove in a container for the unit.
That's where I put it. Circular groove in a square holder.

No, I did not work for Morton/Thiocal or NASA.

R&D at a big company.

Lots of places farm stuff out.

I think that's cool, greydigger,

You obviously have pride of workmanship! I am well aware that you don't have to work for NASA for a part to be used on a shuttle.

Heck, most of the stuff that goes up into the air isn't even from NASA - all those guys that have satellites for phones, and computers, etc.

I've never really had a real job, because I'm only 15 but I turn 16 in a few months and I still don't plan on getting a real job, but I am hoping to try and open up a booth at a furniture store and sell stuff and hopefully pay for rent and items to sell with some of my Christmas money. :laughing9:

Hey jib,
How do you "open a booth" at a furniture store?
The furniture stores I see have a parking area and a building with stuff in it to sell.
If you can sell on the street in front of them that's great.

Parking area here is owned by the stores and sidewalk and street is owned by city/county/?
They all want some kind of tax.

Wish you well and hope you don't get fined for doing business.

There is an antique store here where you pay them every month for a space and you mark your items with your initial and when somebody buys something the cashier writes it down and you go get a check at the first or end of the month.
But since I am a minor I will have to get my parents to really open it up.
