Slow computer? Don't forget to defrag your hard drive often.

Over time, your computer will act slower and slower to perform simple tasks. it's only until we have this problem are we forced to remember to defrag our hard drive. I've always been one to defrag, unless I forget... And I found today that 40% of my drive was fragmented (what made me realize it was it took about 5 seconds to delete or create a folder).

Fragmented hard drives on your computer mean that your files on your computer are split up into various areas of your drive, instead of just one location. When this is the case, your drive takes a lot longer to access files because it has to travel all over Gods green earth to get that one file. But, when the drive has been defraged, the files are put back together again, and your files are found in one spot, instead of all over the hard drive. Can you imagine traveling to 10 different grocery stores to buy groceries? it would take a week!

So, if your computer is acting sluggish, do the following to defrag your drive.

1). On your computer desktop, double click on "my computer".
2). A window will open showing your C: drive. Right click on the C: drive and select 'Properties'.
3). A window will pop-up. Go to the 'tools' tab, and select 'defrag'....
4). Then when the defrag tool opens, select defrag. (alternatively, you can select 'analyze', and it'll tell you just how bad your drive is defragged in %).

When I need to defrag a drive, I usually let it run over night, right before I go to bed, because it will take many hours to run.

If there are enough people interested, I'll write up instructions on how to easily set up your computer to do it automatically for you every month, so you don't have to worry about it.
