Well, I am over the hill so to speak and some of my ideas are from way back. I lived in an era where you had to think for yourself. You didn't have scientist and researchers padding there own nest by shoving unproven theories down your throat. Just look at all the medicines that cure something but may kill you or give you another problem.

One of the old theories that seemed to work was the cold theory so named because it happened in cold weather. It was believer that germs got into different areas of the body and caused pain. If they got into your sinuses, you had a head cold with stopped up nose and then runny nose, if they got into your lungs, you had a chest cold with a cough and congestion. But it was also believed that the same germs could get into muscles and cause pain there. All of these "COLD BUGS" would usually clear themselves in a few days to a week. You basically lived with it till it cleared. now a days it seams that everyone runs to the doctor for some wonder prescription. Even today only time cures a cold. Frank

What? No mustard plaster,or onion poultice, what of heating vinegar and inhaling the fumes? Chicken noodle soup, seems to help a little.
Taking meds for common type cold can pare it down to a few or several days. Just letting a cold run its course it will last about a week!.

It's just easier for people to take pills and with all the ones you see advertised anymore they think that they are a cure all.. Nothing beats a hot shower and some soup and a good nights sleep..

GrizleeBear, That is what the doctor use to say. He knew it had to run it's course and that was the put off. By the way I think the chicken soup helps. I keep a case on hand and start on it as soon as I feel a little bad. Frank

Actually frankn, you are prob not too far off with the letting it run its course. For a "common cold" most of the OTC meds you take are to help with the symptoms and by products of the cold - fever, running nose, aches and pain. Not to actually cure it. It is in fact the bodies own immune system that defeats the actual cold. But I'll let the MDs jump in to correct me.

I am not much for all this wash your hands every few minutes. I wash when I get up in the morning and when I actually get my hands dirty doing something. Other than that, I go natural. I get, on average, one cold a winter. You are actually coated with germs. There is no way you are going to get rid of all of them, actually some are helpful. I was reading an article about germs. It stated we are covered with them and the crotch and arm pits are heavily covered, but the highest concentration is behind the ears. Frank

Life expectancy was about half of what it is today - so maybe survived but certainly didnt thrive. Folks life sucked before modern medicine , etc. child mortality rates were terrible, death during child birth was common. People died miserable deaths from illnesses that we consider trivial now a days. Just walk a colonial graveyard and see all the children and babies. This is history 101. Things were not better during the good old days.

Mistrust of government has always been with us. But this mistrust of science and medicine is a little bit new In my opinion. We used to embrace the great advancement made by our scientists and doctors?? Why are some people now distrustful/afraid of science and medicine - is it just fear of change and what we don't understand? Is science and medicine now seen as being something liberal for some reason? Would live to hear any opinions.

stockpicker,

Agree on the life expectancy thing big time.....I came from a farm family of 9......mostly home remedies back in the day....

Why?? not an issue of not trusting the medical profession.....just not enough money around beyond the basics.....I had an older brother who passed away before I was born due to scarlet fever.....doubt if if even exists today or to a minimal degree.

Regards + HH

Bill

1. "Colds" is a broad term used to describe a group of viruses. I can't remember the exact number, but somewhere between 16-20 separate viruses in the US are considered colds. The two most common currently are the Norovirus and Rotavirus.
2. We have no treatment for the common "cold." Antibiotics do not treat them. We can only treat the symptoms...tylenol for aches, pains, fever, etc..
3. Taking OTC meds for symptom relief will not alter the duration of the illness or your immune system; although, it may help you feel better. Just a matter of personal preference.
4. Current recommendation for cold like symptoms is to wait two weeks before you see a doctor. If it has not run its course by then something else is going on.
