    Dave,

Thanks for the kind words....we've had a few bumps in the road but it kind of seems most folks who participate here can find common ground....everyone has much more in common than the few differences we might have....

And it's the team effort that makes it work....a bit of music, humor, support when needed and yeah just some foolish banter tends to take the edge off all the rough spots we all go through along the way.

    Regards + HH

    Folks,

I've probably posted this one before but it's a very powerful tune.

Had to go to the bank today to open another safety deposit box for a customer who had lost their key.

I'll try to explain with pictures....

The first picture is a standard lock for safety deposit boxes.

These type of locks use a "guard" key that the bank has,
and the "tenant" or renter's key.

The first thing is to pull the tenant side.

    As you can see,
the "fingers" are alternating between the guard key and the tenant key.
(seven guard fingers, seven tenant fingers-14 total)

    I have hand-cut a "universal" guard key.

Using two tools that I created,
I'm able to retract the bolt and open the box.

I will not show the tools that I created because I'm considering patenting them.

Once the customer removes their box, I install a new lock on the door
and make it compatible with the bank's guard key
and provide the bank with two renters keys, stamped with the box number.

    Total time involved:
    About 20-30 minutes.

One thing about opening the box is that I'm only able to see inside the small hole created by pulling
the tenant side "nose." It's a lot of "feeling" as to when the fingers are aligned.

    Hope all are Well.

    Best,

    Scott

    Scott,

Quite the impressive work around on the custom key to open those bank boxes....

Here's a chuckle for you and others on the thread....pretty much 2 years ago I rented a double sized bank box to stash my gold and silver finds....guess what I never got around to putting them in the box yet....lol.

I thought you'd all get a chuckle at my expense.

    Bill,
    Don't lose the key!
I'm betting that it is pricey.
I don't handle the money part, my Friend has that covered.
I just come up with ways to make the job easier.

    Pippin, old Friend,
    Yes, stay a bit longer!

    It's still early.

But if you have to go,

    Not to be misunderstood about the "universal" guard key;

The bank has 2-3 guard keys and they sometimes don't know which one goes to a particular box.
When there is a renter's key, they just keep trying theirs until one works.

I've struggled once or twice with them not knowing which of their keys went to a box I'm trying to open
so I disassembled 3-4 other locks I've replaced and made a composite of the three guard keys on one.
    Viola!

    A "universal" key.
The black on the key is sharpie and I scratch where I want to cut
and use a jewelers saw to make the cuts.

It is near impossible to open a box without the correct guard key.
Between the special key and the two tools,
I can open any box in that bank within 10-15 minutes.
    Or even less.
    We'll see soon.
They want us to do about a dozen in a month or so.

I'll have my friend time me on them.
