Yep. I used to keep one over my desk when I worked in Monroe, LA ... then I found out it is illegal in Louisiana to display a hangman's noose.

Especially with 13 knots,13 bad number,no 13th floor using an elevator as far as I know. What's that got to do with knots anyway.

The bad folks don't like the reminder that it used to be acceptable to fix em.

Grandfather used it a lot of times. When he brought in someone, after the trial if the sentence was death by hanging, he would do it if none of the local constabulary had the courage.

In Oklahoma, his name was still worth a meal and a place to stay in 1980. Met a shopkeeper in Texas in the late 60's who remembered him. He showed me the tree where he did his hangings.

Red, I believe that's what they meant when they said '13 knots'.
Yes, growing up, a lot of us boys used to tie hangman's nooses. Yes, 13 'wraps', loops, what ever. I've wondered a few times if 13 loops were used just because '13' was considered an unlucky number or not.
I read a book a year or so ago about a hangman. It told how he measured the 'hangee' so he could get the length of the rope just right. It had to snap his neck quickly so the prisoner didn't suffer. It mentioned how he got to drinking and some of his hangings 'popped' the prisoner's head completely off the body!
