Been trying to find Social Security and other info on my wife's grandfather . Have his metal SS card and some vague info about him . All searches I have done so far result in someone wanting money to tell me about a person who 'may' be him . He died in 1945 . Is there no free access to info out there ?

Go to the site for the county/parish he was born in and post queries.

You'll get one on one assistance, usually from a family member (may be a distant one though researching that line).

Found my dad's sister who was missing for 65 years (missing from 1936 until 2001) ... alive by doing exactly that. Traced part of his family back to 1533 in Bristol, England.
