What irks me?
OK so let me know what irks you, try to keep it about detecting.
What irks me is when you invite someone to hunt one of your spots and they never return the favor.

Re: What irks me?
When people won't even say Hi, or will look at you funny because they think you're a scrounge. Yeah right, I'm a scrounge with $1,500 worth of detecting equipment strapped on. Stereotypical response from uninformed, narrow-minded people. I was in a park the other day and I said "Good afternoon" to some lady there with her kids and she walked right by and said nothing with one of those looks on her face. What a joke.

Re: What irks me?
What you all said.
Plus: people on the beach who start digging in your holes when your detector goes off. I'm half deaf (really), so my phones are on LOUD - sometimes others can hear, especially when they are walking next to my elbow.
Plus: (and this is an "add-on" to the scrounge statement). The "if you got time for that, don't you have time to have a job".
I have actually heard this more than once, and I cannot help but feel insulted and ticked off. Surprise, I have a job, and like someone already said, I'm carrying around $3000 worth of equipment (me and hubby), not to mention the 4 hour drive I made to get here - well, if you have time to be on the beach, bugging me, don't YOU have time to have a job?
Incredibly, I have never "mouthed off" to any of these people (preservation of the hobby foremost), and I usually end up using valuable
detecting time trying to be nice and explaining my "hobby" - not my job.
Not to take this off thread - but - what do you do about people like that?
How do you handle it?

People who treat me like a criminal when I ask if I can hunt their yard, even if I offered to share my finds.

I've only had that happen one time, (it was a cheap, adjustable type ring - I just gave it to him) but obviously, you also had someone looking over your shoulder, too?

Re: What irks me?
Speeding Mountain bikers urk me. There's an extensive trail system here , alot of which is RR track beds. These guys miss by inches at 30+ MPH. Not just me but equestrians runners and Moms with kids. I've come close to sticking my shovel in their spokes a couple times. If they dropped more stuff for me to find I would be more understanding.
Truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it and ignorance may deride it, but, in the end, there it is.

MD irk:
When the little people come up and ask me what I am doing. I tell them looking for coins. On occasion, I will give one of the little people a penny, just to brighten up their day. What IRKS me is that they rarely say "thank you".
I love to see the smile on the little peoples face when I give them a penny. You would think it was the Hope Diamond. I love that feeling, especially if it is followed up by "thank you".

You really should have thought a bit more before posting that EDDE.

Re: What irks me?
How about this one. Parents that don't watch their kids and their kids walk up to you and ask what you are doing and then grab your machine you set down to dig a hole and start wacking it on something?
