Local Find in Vero Beach

So I'm still waiting for my metal detector to arrive so I can start on my treasure hunting expeditions. I decided to take a walk to see if my hunch on a good beach would turn up anything. Within 10 minutes of walking, I found these 2 items. I know they're some type of metal and based on the size of the shell attached, I'm guessing they're pretty old too. How do I go about removing the buildup without damaging the find??!

Could only get about half the buildup off so I gave up and trashed it. It appears to be just twisted steel or some type of "silver" colored metal....def not silver though. I found both pieces in a large shell deposit without my detector. Going back tomorrow to scan the area and see if anything shows up

How do I go about removing the buildup without damaging the find??!

Google, do it yourself "Electrolysis" - It is a Cleaning Process. Good luck.
