Hi y'all,
Had a great afternoon with hubby and pup out in the woods with the HUGE BLACK SNAKES, frogs and misquitoes. Got some old cans, bottles and household stuff. I think I found a dump and boy oh boy am I going to have fun out there. I didn't even get to walk the whole island because we found the dump fairly easilly. My hubby took a step and we heard a crack like glass and there it started. Most of them were broken but I got some good ones and some old cans as well as what looks like a foot pedal of some kind (piano?), some nails, an old shoe, a coat hook and pottery shards. Pup went for a swim by accident, she thought she still had land under her and whoosh in she went. Her face was worth a million ;D. At least now she likes the water should make bath time easier. I can't wait to get back out there. It was very private and peaceful. Now if I could just get past the snakes :icon_pale:!!! Well here are todays finds for your enjoyment.

HH,

Hello Allmtl!
Sounds like black racers they are not poisonous but they do bite, they will scram if possible. They are the biggest snake we have down here on the cape. The dump looks like newer bottles hopefully deeper is better for you. What is the history of the island? I found a dump on Nantucket last year while deer hunting but never got a chance to dig it. I used to do a lot of bottle digging years ago haven't gone in a long time. My dad owns a house that was built in 1890 and there was a 1700's house they moved (?) on the property before they built.
I searched the property many times to find a dump or "privy" and came up empty. I also searched with my detectors and only found a few Indians and one merc for hours of searching. I'll post some of my bottles sometime.

Thanks Thor,

I am actually doing research on the land that surrounds the island. It is a small one but it was near a mill so I was thinking that it would have been a great dump site while not keeping it on thier living space. I am also coming across alot of flooring pieces so either there was a house there or hired hand huts or it was just their dump. It definately was a party spot from the 50 or 60's on. Next time I am going to the other side to see if there are any signs of foundations or larger trees. Have found a few so far. Hubby thought he had a new hunting spot when he found deer tracks but they are too close to the road so it is a no go!!! Oh well he will have to stick to the state forrest.

Benny,

Thanks but I don't go onto state property MD'ing. My hubby hunts game & I should have been clearer. All the property I search so far is privately owned or legal to detect on. Thanks for looking out for me, Jee I knew ya liked me :hello2:. Have a great weekend.

That was the second biggest Whaling port in the world their on Nantucket. Theirs Treasure stories about Nantucket. Theirs a pond on the S.W side I think. They changed the name of this pond. Can't remember everything. I would also check for fossils , arrow heads on the cliff edges. Theirs stories of cannons filled with coins close to the beach, coins found on wood of wrecks that floated inshore. I would go look on beaches on the south side. Plus check out the pond. Use the free air view on the computer. Good luck
