had a good day today...my first flying eagle, UPDATE on IH...shallow 'N' variety

on a whim I stopped and asked permission at a place a few miles from my home. not an old house, but looked like an old yard with a couple of big oak trees. Found my first flying eagle cent, and my first civil war era artillery button. haven't cleaned anything except under running water, any tips on how to clean the flying eagle and the button? also, does anyone know the era of the button? also got a nice sterling ring with a big red stone, and a tore up ring that I'm pretty sure is gold. 1911 wheat, 1944 merc, 1872 IH, 1900 IH, 1858 flying eagle cent (it's fat too) ;D thanks for looking all. Griff

YES!!!! Great hunt there. Some quality finds. Flying eagles don't show up to often. Don't clean it at all it looks great the way it is. They are just like nickels, made outta the same material and don't clean up good at all. The thing is perfect the way it is. The indian looks like a 1873 or 1878 in the photo, ya sure its a 72 either way any of those years are great. Congrats on a fun great detecting trip. Keep em coming. Some of those old yards are loaded.

Oh man, SWEET! Awesome yard! That indian has a great patina, and the date almost looks like an overstamp on that last digit. Flying eagle too, I agree with Jim, they are fine as is. Cool button, wish I knew more about those things, fun to research. Nice rings and fruit jar lids too, those fruit jar caps are hard to find! j/k. What a way to start out, you earned 'em. ffd

That flying eagle looks too nice to try and clean up if your not sure on how to do it. Never have found one but I bought a cull for .75 cents this month at a stamp club meeting. Yours may be the best I have ever seen come out of the good ol earth. Great find! Congratulations!

Does the "N" in the word "one" on the 72 appear to look weak? If so its a pretty rare coin. Already worth some good moola if not.
Also here is a site for military backmark dating of buttons..... http://www.treasurefish.com/buttonback.htm

man, it didn't look like it at first, the back was a little corroded, and I've had it soaking in olive oil for over a week now. cleaned it up this morning, and sure enough, I think it's pretty obvious that it has the "shallow or weak N" on it. what do you guys think?
