This can be old or just cool. I'm just interested in a little story behind it and maybe a pic. Hoping that together we can post some nice pics of some cool old coins.
I understand nobody wants to give away their hotspots, but maybe just an idea of where the coin was found. For example...old farmstead near big oak tree...or old fairgrounds...or old park...etc.
Also, I am hoping these can be limited to finds made strictly in Michigan. Michigan may not be as old of a state as some...but my guess is that there have been some pretty old lost...then found...coins.
One of my coolest coins and one of 3 pre-1800's coins that I have found (2 in Michigan/1 in Virginia) was found in the fall of 2009.
I found this coin in a little park in Southeast Michigan. It was pretty deep...I'd say an actual 8-9' down.
Its in nice shape too.
1781 North American Token
Its not necessarily worth a lot, but it was pretty cool to find it. It was minted in Ireland if memory serves me right. There isn't a whole lot known about the coin. But it was supposedly made to be used in US since mints weren't set up yet. However, some say it wasn't minted til the early 1800's. Either way, it was a cool find and is listed in Yeoman's Red Book under early american coinage.
Oldest, found in a farmyard near home, I first thought it was an electrical knock-out.
Coolest was the Morgan, found in the picnic area of a pounded church site. The original church burned about 1900, and the dug coin was charred or burnt. I cleaned the heck out of it. ffd

nice stuff guys..... I don't think I ever saw a pic of that morgan cleaned up like that.....turned out pretty nice D! My oldest and only pre 1800 coin Ive dug is this french coin from 1798 found at an old house near downtown. My most fun find is probably this half dime I found near the old seminary school in Leoni township, only 4 inches down on an embankment! both found in 2009 Great idea for a winter post!
My oldest coin so far was found on the "Spring Group 2010 hunt" in Jackson county on some state land at a old homesite dating back to 1830 something.
Only the old cellar hole remained and this 1818 LC was found behind one of the old stones.
Ok this is not my oldest coin, but probably my favorite. This 1876 CC ( Carson City ) Seated Quarter was found in an old park in Indiana. It was my last silver coin of 2005, pictured next to it was my first silver of 2006. The dime is not a favorite, but it was my first seated dime. I actually found 4 seated quarters before my first seated dime. Both are in great condition. It was my wallpaper on my computer for 4 years! By the way, that quarter is my first and only CC mint mark.

Four Seated Quarters!! I have never found one seated quarter in my years of detecting. Dang, ya shoulda left me at least one. Nice nabs Mr. Mike.
This is my coolest coin, to me anywho. I love standing liberty quarters and this was the first one I ever dug and it was in great condition. Coolness abounds from this coin.
All those are just great finds. Wow. SLQ is in amazing shape considering how they normally look, especially with the recessed dates on 1924 and earlier.
The spanish silver is awesome...wonder how many there are lost in this state?

Re: What is your coolest coin find IN MICHIGAN???
I live in northern michigan and the coolest thing I have found was a 1939 cracker Jack salesmens award #360 Only a few ever known to exist. Also found was an 1835 caped bust half dollar.
What go's up must come down What gets lost will get found!
Unfortunately I do not have a pic, as I am on a laptop and my photos are on my desktop, but wanted to add my best "coin" find in Michigan. In 2009 I found an 1832 Nova Scotia Thistle 1/2 Penny Token on the grounds of an old hotel. I thought I had found my first large cent, but after cleaning found out what it really was. I was stoked. The current farmhouse used to be a hotel for people traveling to and from Ionia, MI. Always fascinating me how it ended up here, whether a Canadian dropped it while staying there, etc.
