Just drove by where we found this and the bank has washed out can't wait for the water to go down so I can check it out. I still haven't tried that crabball trick yet, but I'm going to.
Yes these were found in Oregon. I have had better luck getting them open by putting them in the oven under the broiler for about 10 or 15 minutes then dropping them in cold water. More seem to fracture that way. I've got five so far.
thanks for the reply on mu "clam thingy" i really think its a clam of somesort, im not sure but it has a stem where it attached to the sea floor. my friends wife who is into fossils has it right now, checking it out. i saw your crab post awhile back and think it is the coolest fossil post ever on TN. BY far.
so is this location on the coast? on a beach? or in mountains? if you could, take a pic of the area, not to give your location away, but im curious on the terrain.
I actually found quite a few of these on the Washington coast. They cleared an area above a sea wall for building and in the process dug up a bunch of geodes. some had crystal formations but most had fossilized crustaceans inside. It was pretty crazy, it was an entire field of almost perfectly round rocks varying from the size of a golf ball to a bowling ball. I was young and filled the pockets of my bib overalls and took them back to camp. My cousin that took me cant remember the exact location but I remember it was near a dam.
