Carved Oak Chair

A friend has this chair from a neighbor, it's interesting and neither of us has seen one like it before.

It's carved oak, and it was stained dark a long time ago based on the wear on portions of the carving.

The unverified story is that an elder relative brought this over from Ireland 75 years ago.

Not exactly a garage sale find, but we're both into sales and met each other at one, so it's fitting. The furniture board seems very inactive so I posted here.

I included photos of the bottom to better show its construction. Obviously it needs a cleaning.

Any comments or ideas of age, maker or value?

Someone applied modern glue to the joints.

Scene depicts a Franciscan sampling wine. I initially thought
it might be a monk sampling image but the bottle is wrong
and the glass is wrong.

What rest to the right on the barrel, I cant make it out
Bread ? Poultry? the picture is cut off.

The screw holes with the wood caps are a dead giveaway
its not that old.

Even the scrolled cuts look modern.

Thank you for the info. Both of us were questioning the story about the age.

Not sure what's for dinner. Poultry is a good guess. Monk mystery meat?

Look at the hand and bottle area. It is flat, like someone took
A sanding block to highlight the carving, yet the barrel to
the right is untouched.

Monks brew ale/beer etc. Trappist are well known
and still brew and sell today to raise funds.
They refer to it as liquid bread.

Franciscans make wine.

This is absolutely a turn of the century black forest carved chair from Germany. These were quite popular with tourists on the grand tours.

The Dutch also produced carved oak furniture such as this. I think it's over a 100 years old. Pretty neat chair.

I've seen 200 year old black forest clocks made with better craftsmanship, even less than 100 years.

But rush jobs to sell as tourist items never reached the quality of originals.

So is the consensus that the age is genuine, but it's not a high quality or valuable piece? I didn't think it was worth a fortune, my friend will probably just keep it.

I agree with that consensus. I like it, I think it's a cool old chair.
