The smaller coil will allow you to hunt "trashy" areas by being able to seperate out the targets. With a bigger coil it is somtimes hard or impossible to isolate targets that may be laying close together. With the smaller coil it really takes a smaller picture of the area the target lies in. It is pretty standard practice to try to use smaller coils in areas where targets are multiple and very close together. I have the 5x8 coil for my at pro and it really does help isolate those targets, but on the con side you do not cover as much ground with the smaller coil. I have also used the smaller coils in the same manner on my whites machinces. Hope this wasn't to wordy, and hope it helps.
