I know that PI machines like my Infinium LS do not detect well through air, they like to be right down on top of the soil. That said, I was interesting in comparing my new 8" mono coil vs. the stock 10 x 14 DD and came away somewhat surprised.

In the photo below, the 8" is on top and the 10 x 14 DD is on the bottom.

The Air Test performance was nearly identical on my gold nugget, bullet, clad penny, screw, mood ring and silver quarter.

The 8" mono actually did slightly better on the lag screw. The 10 x 14 DD did slightly better on the small nail, nickle, pull tab, earring and silver dime.

All in all they seem to perform equally well, at least in the air test. I don't think I will be putting the 10 x 14 DD back on unless I need to cover a lot of ground quickly, looking for large objects down deep (I have dug up full beer cans at 3 1/2 feet) or I am on really hot soil.
