I find it very rare that the ATP will sound off with a nice smooth tone on zinc pennies. They almost always, no matter their depth, sound like bottle caps or some other piece of trash. They just give off a certain scratchy but not quite broken signal.
Of course I'd expect that out of the corroded or crusty ones but I don't tell too much difference in the good (if a good really even exist) ones.

Not that it would break my heart to pass one (or all of em) up. I hate digging em in the first place so maybe it's for the better anyway!
Anyone else notice this on Zincolns or have any input?

Lol it just occurred to me that I don't find many non copper pennies either. Good discovery, but like you said, I won't lose any sleep over that 1993 memorial I missed either. Happy hunting!

Agreed. Not all zinc targets are gunna be stink'n Lincolns but if this machine is DESIGNED to act that way on zinc pennies and not other targets in that range, I find that to be brilliant!

Just leaving some for the future gen!

The AT Pro has a screen? I hardly ever use it! Depth gauge is really the only part I find useful. Yes I do reference the vdi #'s but I don't rely on em. The AT Pro is all about it's audio. If this machine was painted brown and gold and made by Tesoro, you'd be praising it as the best machine ever built! FACT! If you re-read my post you'll see it's about the sound not the bloody screen I'm referring to. Thanks for the input anyway!

Yep, very distinct sounds. The only thing I watch numbers for is consistency, because if they are consistent usually its a coin if it hits in the 77 and up range, not always, but you have to use the sound also.

I had a similar experience with my AT Pro. I had been avoiding digging signals in the 70's. I decided to dig a 76 the other day, and it was a silver ring....

I haven't seen that the numbers are anywhere consistent enough that I'd rely on em, but the tones don't trip me up much anymore.

You need to come hunting with me! I've found about 50+ Zincolns, with the ATP! I think it might have something to do with the state I live in (Illinois, better known as "the land of Lincoln" make that Zincoln)!:laughing7: I've noticed that they come in at 70-72 on the VDI. The copper ones read higher 76=80 range.

The depth gauge is very helpful

it's ALL helpful once it "clicks" in your mind. The one thing I could do without (if I had too) is the pin point feature. I can get the target spot on,by X-ing the target with the audio signal. I hardly ever use the pin point feature, anymore.

Same here, I never use the pin point unless I'm just curious to see if it works. The x technique works very fast and accurate for me, it took a bit of practice, like everything, but it works awesome.

Another thing I like doing is to use my Sampson digger, where, and when I can. If a target is 6 inches down or less,I just cut a full depth plug with it,and the target comes out in the plug 90 percent of the time. I then run the coil over the hole and the plug. If I get a signal from the plug, then I just grab a handful of dirt from the plug and run it across the top of my coil. If I don't get a signal,I throw the dirt back into the hole. After I recover the target,I run the coil over the hole, and the plug again to make sure I got all the targets, then just close it up,and on to the next target! This way I also don't have to use a towel to hold all the dirt,I dig out!

Ohh ya the samson digger is the s#it I to try & use mine as much in places as i can i got the 18" t handle, soon as i get a couple bux gonna grab up the bomb sheath for it. Shovel is pretty small & packs an amazing punch suited with the bomb sheath & its size none destructive looking that Sony catch someones eye most likley will b my new everyday digger

How does the 18" Sampson do? I thought it would be too short,to use standing up?
