Less trash, more open...use the bigger.
More trash, tighter areas smaller coil.

I used a 14 in. coil at one time. I detected for months and my wrist started hurting so I sold it. The deepest coin I found with it was a mercury dime at 10 inches.
Most coins are 8 inches or less in the ground. If your getting that with the coil you have now I wouldn't wast your money.
