Buying a Garrett AT Pro

I found a used AT Pro on craigslist this week. I comes with 3 pinpointers, also Garrett, two coil heads, a trowel, headphones and case. I talked the guy down to $475 if I come pick it up. He is also going to show me how to use it. This will be my first metal detector. Do you all think this is good deal or should I tell the guy to kick rocks?

Sounds like a GREAT deal to me. I use a Whites DFX, and Fisher CZ-20.
A buddy of mine sold his Deus and bought a CTX-3030. He has tried the AT Pro and said that it's an excellent machine. I'm looking to get one myself.

Also the guy lives in small town that I have never been to but have been wanting to explore. So that is a plus.

I like my ATP & use it mostly for coin & jewelry hunting - my deepest find, a clad quarter at 9.5" because of fill dirt. Sounds like a good package deal & a lot of people use them. If you buy it I wish you the best of luck & fantastic finds.

That's a smoking deal! Grab it while you can. Be sure and test the detector out on some coins in the grass.

If you have a small (2-3 gram) gold nugget it should detect at about 2".
And be sure to test the pinpointers too!

Start with Pro zero, 32 iron. You wil have to dig all targets until you get used to the machine but then you will start to dig less as you go. DoN't start in the normal mode then you will have to start all over learning. Plus some really good headphones will greatly improve the performance and finds. I also like the bigger NEL COILS.

It might have been a mistake but I switched back and forth between pro and standard modes. I did have fun. I didn't dig all that I should. I got a little discouraged for a little bit with 5 nails in one hole. I also used the headphones for about half the time then put them up for an hour or so. I have the 5x8 coil on right now.
